Social Media Management
Countering the social media echo chamber
Social media is both an opportunity and a challenge for public school leaders everywhere. On one hand, it can be a great way to reach many people quickly with important information and messaging. And on the other, conversations can quickly get out of control.
For Parkway Schools Director of Communications, Annie Dickerson, ThoughtExchange overcomes the challenges of social media by creating an engaging discussion that stays civil and structured.
“The feedback in our communities is already out there on a range of topics. And ThoughtExchange allows us to take that and control it more than on Facebook or the conversations happening in our schools,” Dickerson explains. “I see it as a more strategic way to have the conversations that everyone’s already having.”
Dickerson adds that ThoughtExchange has social media-like interactivity that drives participation and increases engagement.
“Just like Facebook, in an exchange, people are afraid they’ve missed something that someone is talking about in their community or their neighborhood or their school. So they jump in,” she explains. “Everyone wants to participate because they get to see what other people have said.
“ThoughtExchange gives participants the feeling of a personal, face-to-face interaction. I describe it as a combination of Facebook and a town hall meeting. People get to see what other people are saying, but it’s much more convenient for them and still controlled for us.”
