Reducing staff resistance to change through ownership
For District Superintendent Dr. Jeff Matteson and his leadership team at TST BOCES, the key to making successful change involves deeply including staff in discussions and decisions that affect them. Dr. Matteson historically used surveys to engage employees, but realized they weren’t producing the results they needed.
“In surveys, we get varying participation and results because people feel like they’re being surveyed to death and we’re always left to interpret the comments section,” he explains.
“ThoughtExchange gives us a way to not only hear from our employees but also have them interpret the results. We know what’s rising to the top is what really matters. We can tell the energy behind an idea and focus on what matters most.”
Along with getting actionable insights for leadership, Dr. Matteson adds that the ThoughtExchange Summary Report feature lets him easily respond to staff input.
“We always know we’re hitting the mark when we respond because our participation rates stay high when we ask for their thoughts again later,” he says. “People know that they’re making a difference, they’re having some concrete input into what happens in our organization. They know we’re reading it, and we’re considering it with the whole group.
“ThoughtExchange is an ongoing conversation with our faculty and staff. We think it improves the two-way conversation astronomically. We’re not getting the resistance to change as a result.”
